The Proper Sphere of Government and God, part 3 (of 3)

As Fyodor Dostoyevsky (1821–81), the Russian novelist and philosopher said: “If there is no God, all things are permissible.” God, through the Bible, is the objective standard for truth by which government and its functions can and are to be evaluated.1 Without God, anything goes, and I do mean anything.

Because of fallen human nature and sin—which broke man’s natural relationship with God—there is a constant yearning for something higher, better, and bigger, in ourselves that is opposed to God. Because of this yearning that is opposed to God, man fails to find fulfillment in God. Instead, man tries to find fulfilled in power, money, and honor (all can be provided by government) in order to gain meaning and significance, but this too is ultimately not fulfilling. True fulfillment only comes with knowing and following God.

If this yearning for higher, better, and bigger apart from God is not resisted, government will fill the void present in man and with it increase dependence. And those who are the leadership of government get to assume charge of all those under them. If America does not understand the nature of truth and its ultimate source in the creator God, then there is little to no hope of stemming the ultimate dissolution of our country through internal rot. The further God and Christianity are flung from the public sphere and replaced by government, the more government will become the god of the United States.

If the government is the standard for truth then we must beware, because the government has the power of the sword; then government can determine what is good and evil. Historical examples abound: Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, etc. Insert your dictator of choice. God (at least in Germany’s and Russia’s case) was taken out of their culture and replaced by the State. Truth is God’s sphere; His standards are viewed by many as limitations but man needs limitations in order to thrive. Does a child without discipline grow up to become an upstanding member of society?

If we continue to select bad officials for public office and we ourselves practice evil (child murder a.k.a. abortion, lying, and corruption of all kinds), we are expediting our own demise. God will not put up with evil and sin forever. Read 2 Kings 17:7-18. Our country’s end may not be tomorrow, but it is coming—unless we turn back to Truth. Our demise, after internal rot has taken its toll, will probably come from external powers (Islam, China, or Russia come to mind).

Reversing this decay starts with us individually, then we must hold our officials to a moral standard. How do we get there? We must know what the Truth is. We cannot know Truth without God and the Bible. God is the answer, the Bible provides the way to know God and the standard for our thoughts and actions.

The evidence is plain, without moving the government back to its proper place it will continue to grow in its power and control. (Please listen to Paul Harvey’s “The Testing Time!”) It needs to be relegated to protecting and defending its citizens, and helping to create an environment where its citizens have enough freedom to embrace industry and creativity, be allowed to live in peace, and even fail. This can only come through understanding the nature of Truth and educating others on the proper function of government and our role in it. Again, God is the answer.

Part one, and part two.
